Working with people who have experienced violence or trauma requires a special approach. Words alone are often not enough. The body and creative expression must also be involved in order to express and process complex emotions.
Art therapy and storytelling can be powerful tools here that open new paths to understanding, contact and change.
In this course, which spans two days with a month's interval, you will learn how as a psychotherapist you can use art, creativity and storytelling as part of your practice. We combine theory, reflection and concrete exercises so that you gain both new knowledge and experience with how the methods can be applied directly in working with clients who are carrying trauma.
The course gives you a thorough introduction to the Art for Change method, which focuses on trauma reduction through artistic and relational processes. You will learn how creative forms of expression can function as a non-verbal channel for emotions and experiences, and how they can support the development of new, empowering life stories.
Practical tools within art therapy, creativity and storytelling
Specific creative exercises for use in practice
Knowledge about creativity, expressive art therapy and true storytelling
Insight into how art can support people with traumatic experiences
Tools for self-care as a professional
Opportunity to present your own cases in a creative way
The method
The method itself - Art for Change - has been developed with a focus on trauma reduction through artistic and relational processes.
It is based on five elements:
Expression through art - non-verbal language for emotions and experiences
Creative community exercises - building trust and social resilience
Anchoring in the body and the present - physical exercises for grounding and presence
New life story - rewriting personal narratives and strengthened identity
Therapist's well-being - focus on professional self-care through art
In addition to the above, you will have the opportunity to network with colleagues, where together you can spar with each other on learning and the centrality of your own experiences from working as a psychotherapist with people who have been exposed to violence resulting in trauma.
The course will also show how art and creativity can be the path to healing, insight and change in the individual.
The course is aimed at psychotherapists MPF who work with victims of violence and trauma - both children and adults.
The project was developed by ArtMentum.dk and the Nordic School of Health and Arts, and is based on several years of work with art and creativity as a method for processing trauma and violence.
